Why Affiliate Marketing Should Work in Kigali: Unlocking a New Digital Economy for Rwanda

By Frank Mugarura

Kigali has established itself as one of Africa's fastest-growing cities, known for innovation, entrepreneurship, technology adoption and a favourable business environment. From mobile money and e-commerce to digital services and online entrepreneurship, Rwanda continues to position itself as a regional leader in the digital economy. Yet one digital business model remains largely untapped: affiliate marketing.

Around the world, affiliate marketing has created opportunities for businesses to increase sales while enabling individuals to generate income online without creating their own products. In markets such as the United States, Europe, India, South Africa and Kenya, it contributes billions of dollars in annual revenue. The question is no longer whether affiliate marketing works. It does. The real question is why it has not yet become mainstream in Kigali, and how Rwanda can leverage this powerful model to create jobs, support businesses and accelerate digital transformation.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based model where individuals or businesses earn commissions for promoting another company's products or services. Instead of paying for advertisements upfront, businesses reward affiliates only when a sale, lead, app download, booking or specific action is completed. A blogger promotes a Kigali hotel and earns a commission on every booking; an influencer recommends an app and earns for every new user; a marketer promotes an online course and receives a percentage of each sale. It creates a win-win for both businesses and marketers.

Kigali Already Has the Digital Infrastructure

Internet access continues to grow across Rwanda, particularly in Kigali where smartphones and mobile connectivity are widespread. Consumers increasingly search for products online, compare prices, follow social-media recommendations and make mobile payments. Rwanda's mobile-money ecosystem, including MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money and banking apps, makes it easier than ever to track transactions and pay commissions. And as online shopping expands across electronics, fashion, food delivery, hotel bookings and professional services, affiliate marketing becomes a natural extension of customer acquisition.

A Young, Digital-First Population

Rwanda's youth are creating content on TikTok, building audiences on Instagram, managing YouTube channels, running blogs and operating WhatsApp communities. Many already influence purchasing decisions but are not compensated through structured affiliate programs. Affiliate marketing would let these creators monetise their audiences while helping businesses reach customers, earning recurring, performance-based income rather than relying solely on sponsorships.

Cost-Effective Marketing for Businesses

Marketing budgets remain limited for many SMEs. Traditional advertising often requires upfront payments, long-term contracts and uncertain returns. Affiliate marketing changes the equation: businesses only pay when results are achieved. A restaurant can offer a commission for every reservation, a hotel for every booking, a training institution for every enrolled student, a software company for every active subscriber. This performance-based structure significantly reduces risk.

Tourism Can Benefit Massively

Tourism products are naturally suited to affiliate programs because they often carry high transaction values: hotel bookings, resort stays, tour packages, car rentals, event tickets and adventure experiences. A travel blogger promoting a luxury resort in Musanze could earn on every booking; a YouTube creator showcasing Kigali attractions could earn whenever viewers book tours, creating a network of digital ambassadors promoting Rwanda globally.

Creating Jobs and Helping Businesses Scale

Not everyone has capital to start a business, but many people have communication, marketing, social-media, sales and content-creation skills. Affiliate marketing lets individuals earn without inventory, offices or large startup investment, so students, graduates, parents, freelancers and entrepreneurs can all participate. For businesses, affiliates become a distributed sales force: instead of a few representatives, hundreds of partners can promote products simultaneously, driving faster market penetration. Modern platforms make this transparent through referral links, promo codes, tracking and analytics dashboards.

What Kigali Needs to Make It Work

Unlocking the full potential takes several stakeholders: businesses creating affiliate programs, agencies educating and managing campaigns, creators building trust through genuine recommendations, local startups developing tailored platforms, and universities teaching affiliate marketing as a digital-entrepreneurship skill. The best-positioned sectors include hospitality and tourism, education and training, technology, retail and e-commerce, financial services and health and wellness.

The Future Is Now

As Rwanda pursues its vision of a knowledge-based economy, affiliate marketing represents a chance to create a new category of digital entrepreneurship. The ingredients already exist: a connected population, growing internet usage, mobile payments, emerging e-commerce, a vibrant creator economy and entrepreneurial businesses. It is not simply another tactic; it is an ecosystem connecting businesses, creators, marketers and consumers through shared value. The city is ready, the businesses are ready, the creators are ready. The time for affiliate marketing in Kigali is now.
